Be Happy

Here’s why you should leave your worries behind

I’ll admit I’m a glutton for new experiences. I can’t get enough. That’s why I love traveling so much. Every new place you visit brings unique sights, smells, and flavors that awaken your senses and remind you how wonderful it is to be alive. Especially in the wake of the last year of lockdown, I’m itching to go outside of my comfort zone and find new ways to grow and learn.

But not everyone is comfortable with traveling yet. Or perhaps a trip to a foreign land isn’t in your budget. No problem! You can find unique opportunities locally that will shake up your status quo. We all benefit from learning new things. It helps us to understand our fellow humans better. If we stay in the same routine day after day, month after month, year after year, we aren’t taking advantage of all this world—our life—has to offer.

New experiences don’t have to cost a lot. Even when you have to part with some of your hard-earned cash, you deserve to splurge on yourself now and then. As many of you know, I’m a big fan of therapeutic massage. I find it’s good for my body and my soul. Recently I decided to try something new: a sound bath meditation at Wells Therapeutics in Virginia Beach. Accompanied by gentle massage, the meditation was a deeply moving journey into myself, into a place where time and space seemed suspended and I felt a sense of peace and oneness with the moment.

Brien Egan, who has been practicing and teaching spirituality for two decades, used crystal bowls, gongs, chants, and his amazing energy to help me uncover deep-seated emotions, many that I had successfully buried beneath my everyday existence. While Brien used sound and Reiki to provide healing, Emily Wells added thoughtful massage to help me reach a deeper relaxed state. Afterwards, I felt different somehow. It wasn’t anything I could put my finger on, no stunning breakthrough occurred, but I felt lighter and more aware of myself.

You can find some of Brien’s meditations online (just search his name). Try one. The soothing sounds will take you far away, and sometimes that’s just what we need: to escape for a while. Because when we come back, life looks different, better, brighter.

Try something new this month. Just for you. Because when you take better care of yourself, you’re a happier person. When you’re happier, you make the people around you happier, too. “Don’t worry, be happy” is kind of a cliché, but really, which would you rather do? Life’s short. Seek happiness and leave your worries behind. Namaste.
