Adventuring

Adventures are all around. Try something new for a change.

Hello! This month we celebrate adventure, one of my favorite themes. When I think of adventures, I envision activities that take me out of my comfort zone and introduce me to new experiences and feelings. Adventures can be scary—like the first time I tried downhill skiing in my late 30s. After falling down too many times to count, I persevered and managed to enjoy myself. It was all downhill from there!

But adventures can also be more cerebral, like seeing a Shakespeare play or listening to an orchestra for the first time. Yet when you sit in the concert hall, listen to the musicians tuning up, and watch the maestro walk onto the stage, you feel the electricity in the audience and soon you are entranced by music that touches your soul in a way it never has before.

Adventures can be practical like learning how to knit or make a fancy dessert. One of my favorite adventures is going into a grocery store in a foreign country and discovering unusual groceries, exotic produce and spices, and local cheese. I can get lost in a grocery store, trying to decipher labels as I plan what to cook for dinner that night.

As I write this column, Peter and I are embarking on a long-dreamed-of adventure in Europe. We’re camping for four months while traveling through 15+ countries. I’m looking forward to exploring many grocery stores, as well as discovering insights about our neighbors in the Old Country.

Don’t worry, I’ll be working remotely while we’re on this journey so you’ll continue to find Tidewater Family Plus every month in your local Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and Wawa. Starting in June, I’ll be writing about our European adventure—so stay tuned. I’ll also be posting periodically on Tidewater Family Plus’ Facebook page, so make sure you like us so you can keep up with our travels.

At the moment, we’re in Bremen, Germany, where it’s cool and windy. Soon we head south for the beaches of Croatia and Greece. Can’t wait. Meanwhile, if you want to take an adventure close to home, check out our 2023 Adventure Guide in this month’s issue and do something new and daring for a change. Happy adventuring!
