STEM Ideas for Inspiring Girls

Tips to encourage girls to explore science, math, technology, and engineering.

  • Connect your girl with problem-solving and computational-thinking activities. For starters, encourage younger girls to play with construction toys, take things apart and put them back together again, draw, and work with their hands. Find things to use for play that will help them slow down and notice the wonders around them. Remember what it was like using a magnifying glass to examine bugs in the backyard, fallen flowers, leaves, and spider webs? These objects can spark questions and conversations that will lead to more learning and more activities.
  • Have puzzles, tangrams, origami, building blocks, and LEGO sets around for fun and to help girls build spatial skills. Research shows that playing with construction toys can promote spatial skills, and that can unveil an inner engineer!
  • Get creative with chemistry and make some slime at home or use cooking lessons as an introduction to chemistry: heating, freezing, mixing, and blending are all processes used in the laboratory and the kitchen. If you’re up for it, get really creative with Play-Doh or clay and make sculptures with lights, motors, buzzers, and explore the basics of electricity and electrical circuits. You can check out a number of videos on YouTube, such as one called “Squishy Circuits.”
  • Use boxes you’re recycling to build engineering design creations. Check out “Left Brain, Craft Brain” for ideas on using cardboard for activity projects to teach engineering. www.leftbraincraftbrain.com
  • Kids are natural collectors, so look inside their pockets, backpacks, or drawers, and you’ll probably find some amazing stuff to investigate with your child. Invite her to share what she knows about them—how they work, their purpose, their make-up, and more. It will be fun, and it might lead you into new learning directions
